Episode 308 - Black Heist Films of the 90s, and Cultural Appropriation with Rechie Valdez

On this better-than-late-then-never episode, special guest and friend of the podcast Rechie Valdez joins Jezzie and Sigi in the virtual studios. Rechie shares her unique immigration story which starts in Zambia, Africa and shares how her parents’ perseverance is a source of inspiration in her life. During this month of January we reach into the Pop Culture Vault and discuss Black Heist Films of the 1990s. Rechie and Sigi share their thoughts on "Set It Off" and that even after 24 years, it is still a stark reminder that the social injustices presented in the movie still persist now. Jezzie revisits Quentin Tarantino’s "Jackie Brown" and its blaxploitation influences and comments on police brutality. Later the group discusses cultural appropriation of Black Culture by Diasporic Filipinos.
