Episode 204 - Patron Saints of Nothing and FilipinX identies

On this episode, your co-hosts take up the FilipinX Lit Club's summer book club recommendation of Randy Ribay's "Patron Saints of Nothing."  This young adult novel follows the protagonist, Jay Reguero, on a quest to the Philippines to understand his cousin's untimely death.  This cultural awakening and discovery for the "Patron's" main character, Jay, not only leads him to the reasons surrounding his cousin's death, but a better self-understanding as well.  Sigi and Jezzie are joined by their inaugural guest, Chelle Turingan, where they discuss various themes from the book, like Filipino identity in the diaspora, and going back 'home' to the Philippines.  Finally, they unpack what FilipinX identifies, its growing importance in unsettling Spanish colonialism and how no one can be placed in a checkoff box.

Taste Test of Pre-release of Celine Dion's "Courage" (Episode 203.625)

On this 5/8" Episode, Jezzie tests out a sample of Celine Dion's pre-release of "Courage" and shares his thoughts on this diva's most layered offering to date with Sigi and Halo Halo's inaugural guest, Chelle Turningan!  At the beginning Chelle and Sigi sort out honourifics, and at the end, Jezzie computes album counts, according to streaming services.  In between, we hear about an album contemplating resurrection and how to make room for grief. Oh, and cuz we need to say it: our hearts will go on for Celine!

They review the buzz on the forthcoming original programming on this service and dissect the brand voice of Disney.  Next, they discuss how filial piety is central to the Filipino culture being family-centred, and how every member of the family keeping each other's interests in mind are the underpinnings of its mechanics. Later, they speak of how patience from every member of the family is the lubricant to this hallmark value.
