Episode 510 - Deep Dive on ”Poker Face” and Filipino Family Feuds

On this new episode of The Halo Halo Podcast, Jezzie and Sigi dive into Rian Johnson’s tv series "Poker Face" and Filipino Family Feuds. But first, Sigi gets cathartic and talks Oscars, "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and his beef with a joke he should have trademarked before Hugh Grant used it. As Jezzie sorts through Sigi’s deluge of emotion he briefs us on his love of "Wednesday" and "The Last of Us".
After that meaty catch up, they delve into "Poker Face" and how its Columbo/Quantum Leap-inspired style mystery detective dramedy leads viewers to follow Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) sleuthing her way out of jeopardy while on the run from a crime boss, Sterling Sr (Ron Perlman) and his henchman Cliff (Benjamin Bratt). Later, Jezzie notes how one of the overarching themes of power struggle can be seen in Filipino culture through family feuds. He discusses how Filipino pop culture alludes to family feuds in their teleseryes and movies and how “ridos” or persistent feuds exist in some parts of the Philippines. He also examines reasons for family feuds and often when in a feud, to a moment to contemplate and meditate on who the actual villain is in the feud–its probably not the person you’re directly fighting.

Taste Test of ”Glass Onion:A Knives Out Mystery” (Episode 509.625)

On this Taste Test episode of The Halo Halo Podcast, Sigi and Jez finally peel back the layers of the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Jez pulls off a master class in food analogy referencing the movie as a visit to a Korean BBQ restaurant while Sigi sheepishly likens his movie viewing experience as going to a guilty pleasure of food chain with his wife on date night. To kick off Crime and Punishment theme for this March on The Halo Halo Podcast, Sigi and Jezzie welcome special guest, Christine Abrigana, the creator and host of Lagim: A Filipino True Crime Podcast. Joining the hosts virtually  from Greece, Christine dives into the podcast to talk about her immigration story; growing up in Davao City; where she is locating herself at the moment and Miss Universe pageants. Later, Christine shares with us how her podcast began in December 2020 and features cases involving Filipinos in the motherland and the diaspora. Episode 508.5 - Revisiting Community Care

To end off our Social Justice episodes this February, Jezzie and Sigi revisit Community Care. They both acknowledge that taking action through social justice work can be tiring and note the  importance to take care of ourselves and others.  One way of taking action can be about providing community care, in any way we know how.  At the end of the day, community care is about infusing this world with more compassion.

On this revisiting of social justice topics for the month of February, your co-hosts make even more room for anger and decide to linger on this topic further.  As they linger on this topic of anger, Sigi and Jezzie are reminded of how anger reveals the true source of injustice that marginalized communities face and decide to recall Episode 309 - Righteous Anger & Indignation, where we are reminded that anger is really a call to help others instead of shaming those that have faced oppression.

Episode 507.5 - Revisiting Making Room for Anger

Your co-hosts continue to revisit previous episodes of their Social Justice Collections for this month of February. In this episode revisit, they return to Episode 216.5 - "Making Room for Anger," where they discuss how anger naturally comes after communities mourn a tragedy.  Sigi and Jezzie discuss the importance of needing to make room for that anger and being prepared for it.  They speak of how being able to make room for other people's anger is an important way to be in solidarity with those who have experienced injustices and oppression.
 

Episode 507 - Revisiting Empowerment through Solidarity and Mourning

The Halo Halo Podcast brings back its Social Justice centered episodes for this month of February. The co-hosts revisit Episode 312.625 "Empowerment through Solidarity and Mourning" in light of the community feelings that emerged from the Lunar New Year Shooting in Monterey Park California. In this episode revisit, they discuss the overwhelming range of emotions that were encountered in the Asian Community, and how mourning with others can lead to solidarity and healing.
